Thursday, May 8th, 2025: The Camp Shanks Museum will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Camp Shanks Museum, on South Greenbush Road near the intersection of Routes 303 and 340 in Orangeburg, New York 10962.  Camp Shanks Museum commemorates the largest World War II embarkation camp on America’s East Coast.  Camp Shanks served as a point of embarkation for troops departing overseas during World War II. Dubbed "Last Stop USA", the camp housed about 50,000 troops spread over 2,040 acres and was the largest World War II Army embarkation camp, processing 1.3 million service personnel including 75% of those participating in the D-Day invasion. In 1945 Camp Shanks housed German and Italian prisoners of war.  After the war, Camp Shanks was converted into housing for veterans with families attending colleges and universities in the New York City area under the GI Bill; the settlement, then known as Shanks Village, closed in 1954.  A small museum opened near the site in June 1994 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of D-Day.  Admission to the museum is Free.

Watchfires - Traditional Memorial Day Remembrance

On May 30, 1987, the traditional Memorial Day, members of Rockland County chapter 333, Vietnam Veterans of America, and every year since, have come together to build Watchfires along the western shores of the Hudson River.

Watchfires date back to our country’s first war. George Washington used them to signal the ceasefire ending the Revolutionary War. Reference is made in "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" to the use of them in the Civil War.
We built our fires according to the military specifications of the 1700’s: 21 foot square at the base and 21 feet high. We used the mountain-tops when we could, which were reminiscent of our firebases in Vietnam.

Each year, the fires are lit at midnight, to burn for the 24 hours of the traditional Memorial Day. We stand watch, changing shifts as we had a generation ago, symbolically keeping watch for our lost patrol that still has not returned, and the patrols of past wars, to our country’s first soldiers who fought and may still wander along these shores.

Watchfire Ceremonies will begin at 11:30 p.m. and Watchfires will be lit at midnight on May 30th at these sites: Piermont Pier, Clausland Mountain in Orangeburg, Eugene Levy Park on Route 45 in Pomona, and Bowline Park in Haverstraw, New York.

Mark Woods Jr. Induction Into NYS Veterans Hall of Fame

New York State Senator Bill Weber is sponsoring a few upcoming events for veterans.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Senator Bill Weber Announces Posthumous Induction of Mark Woods Jr. into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame

Nanuet, NY — Senator Bill Weber is honored to announce the posthumous induction of Clarkstown Councilman Mark Woods Jr. into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. This special recognition celebrates Mark's dedication to his country, community, and fellow veterans. The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place at the New York State Capitol in Albany on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. Mark’s wife, Jeanne Woods, will be present to accept the award on his behalf.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Mark Woods Jr. was inspired to serve by his uncle, a Vietnam War veteran. He attended The Citadel, a prestigious military college, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. His early assignments took him to Berlin at the end of the Cold War and later to Bosnia as part of a United Nations peacekeeping mission.

After leaving active duty, Mark served as a corrections officer and border agent before joining the NYPD, where he worked on foot patrol, in the Vice Squad, and later in the elite Joint Terrorism Task Force. Following 9/11, Mark was recalled to active military duty and deployed to Iraq, where he served in Civil Affairs and helped rebuild civil society in conflict zones.

Following his second honorable discharge, Mark returned to the NYPD and became deeply involved in veterans advocacy. He served as Deputy Director of the Rockland County Veterans Service Agency and later as Director of the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Program at BRIDGES, where he provided critical services to veterans in crisis.

Senator Weber stated, "Mark Woods Jr. exemplified the spirit of selfless service. His dedication to his country, his community, and especially to his fellow veterans, was unparalleled. This induction into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame is the least we can do to ensure Mark's legacy of compassion, leadership, and service will be remembered and honored."

Carlos Martinez, LMSW, CEO and Executive Director of BRIDGES, shared: "I can think of no one more deserving at this moment. Mark Woods is the purest example of a serviceman dedicated to his country and his community. He was humble, passionate and undeniably committed to seeing our community be better. I can't think of a better way to pay tribute to a selfless man like Mark Woods and his enduring legacy than his induction to the NYS Veterans Hall of Fame."

Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann also reflected on Woods' legacy: "I am proud to help honor the life and legacy of Mark Woods as he is inducted into the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame. Mark dedicated his life to protecting, serving, and uplifting others; from his service in the United States Army, to the streets of NYC as an NYPD officer, to his compassionate work with our local veterans, and finally his time as Town Councilman. His unwavering commitment to his community and helping others will always be an inspiration. Clarkstown and NYS will always remember Mark Woods, and we proudly give thanks for his lifetime of service to all."

The New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame was created to honor veterans who have not only served with distinction in the U.S. Armed Forces but who have also gone on to make significant contributions to their communities. Mark Woods Jr. is a shining example of that legacy.

Individual Unemployability If You Can't Work

Individual Unemployability if you can’t work
If you can’t work because of a disability related to your service in the military, you may qualify for Individual Unemployability. This means you may be able to get disability compensation or benefits at the same level as a Veteran who has a 100% disability rating. Keep reading to find out if you may be eligible.

Am I eligible for this benefit from VA?
You may be eligible for Individual Unemployability if you meet the requirements listed here.
This must be true:
You can’t hold down a steady job that supports you financially (known as substantially gainful employment) because of your service-connected disability. Odd jobs (marginal employment) don’t count.
And one of these must be true:
  • You have at least 1 service-connected disability rated at 60% or more disabling, or
  • You have 2 or more service-connected disabilities, with at least 1 rated at 40% or more disabling and a combined rating of 70% or more
In certain cases—for example, if you need to be in the hospital often—you may qualify at a lower disability rating.

If I’m eligible for Individual Unemployability, will my disability rating change?
No. If you’re eligible for Individual Unemployability, the amount of your monthly compensation payment will change, but your disability rating will stay the same.

What’s an example of Individual Unemployability?
A Veteran has a service-connected heart condition and a 60% disability rating. She was still able to work until last year when she began to get chest pain when doing anything physical, like walking or lifting boxes. Her doctor told her to retire as soon as possible. She filed a claim for more disability compensation. We reviewed her work and education history and agreed that she was individually unemployable because of her service-connected disability. So we increased her disability compensation to the same rate as a 100% disabled Veteran.

How do I get these benefits?
You’ll need to submit both of the forms listed here.
and
Note: You must have a service-connected disability to get a clothing allowance. If you haven’t filed a claim for disability compensation yet, you’ll need to do that first.
Find out how to file a claim for disability compensation

What evidence do I need to submit?
You’ll have to provide evidence (supporting documents like a doctor’s report or medical test results) showing that your disability prevents you from holding down a steady job.
We’ll also review your work and education history.

What if I have questions about these benefits?
You can call us at 800-827-1000. We’re here Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET.
Gold Star Services Network (GSSN)
What Is a Gold Star Family?

A Gold Star Family is a term of honor given to the immediate family members of those who have died as a result of U.S. Military Service. This includes parents, spouses, children, and siblings who carry the weight of profound personal loss, having sacrificed a loved one for the nation’s freedom and security.

The term "Gold Star" originates from the practice during World War I, when families with members serving in the armed forces would display a service flag in their window. Each blue star on the flag represented a family member in active military service.  If that loved one died while serving, the blue star was replaced with a gold one, signifying the ultimate sacrifice. The gold star symbolized not only the family's loss but also the nation’s gratitude and recognition of their heroism.

These families bear a title that is both a tribute and a testament — a visible reminder of the price of freedom and the enduring impact of military service.

The Mission of GOLD STAR SERVICES NETWORK (GSSN) is to honor and support Gold Star Family Members by acknowledging the profound grief these Families endure for our nation that can never be repaid.

GSSN Board Members utilize their experience in both the Media and Hospitality industries to partner with local organizations to promote awareness and provide events designed to recognize the heroic legacy of the loved ones these Families have lost.

GSSN has the distinction of being founded by a Gold Star Family Member who understands deeply how the long-lasting effects of this unique burden weighs heavily on all Family Members. We strive to create a compassionate Network where no Family feels alone in their loss.

Gold Star Services Network (GSSN) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  For further information or to see upcoming events, view their website here:

Preventing a Crisis Before It Occurs
Preventing a crisis before it occurs for my Veteran spouse

If you are having thoughts of suicide, call 988, then PRESS 1 or visit http://www.veteranscrisisline.net.

My spouse retired from military service in 2024. His active-duty career had seen him through years of combat deployments, duty assignments around the world, physical strains on his body and distance from his family.  But the mental toll of military life and transition is what deeply concerned me.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Veterans under the age of 45, and more than 40% of Veterans say they experience high levels of difficulty when transitioning. I wanted to prepare us for the challenges of his PTSD and adjustment to civilian life.

I turned to Blue Star Families for guidance. As a trustworthy national nonprofit organization that works to support military connected families where they live and serve, they offer countless programs and opportunities for service members, families, Veterans and civilian supporters. Its Blue Star Support Circles Upstream Solutions to Crisis program was exactly what I was looking for.  Blue Star Support Circles are facilitated, non-clinical cohorts for Veteran and service member supporters.

Family members and friends are best positioned to identify and support a Veteran or service member heading toward crisis; we are the people who see the signs and symptoms firsthand. The free program is designed for anyone who wants to understand suicide and stress due to combat, military life and Veteran challenges. Even better, the program is virtual and confidential to allow participants to engage and ask questions in a safe environment.

I entered my cohort last year with a bit of trepidation and low expectations. I have attended suicide prevention training multiple times and felt like there was no more to learn. I’m happy to say that I was wrong. This program is unlike others; here’s what it included.
Peer connection

I felt that I could trust my fellow peers in my cohort and our leader. The virtual sessions always felt safe and confidential, and I could ask questions big and small. Participants also have access to a private, closed, virtual group in the Blue Star Neighborhood, the organization’s virtual platform for members. This only enhanced the connection between us.

Expert presentations
There were presentations from multiple partner organizations, including Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), Psych Armor, American Red Cross, Lenny Learning and Spiritune. Each brought new information and strategies; whether it was about recognizing suicidal warning signs, learning how to talk about suicide, or a free membership to Spiritune for music therapy, all were amazing.

Free resources
I mentioned the free membership to Spiritune, but that is just the start. There were Blue Star Families resources like the Program Workbook to guide one through the program and free Psych Armor courses to continue one’s learning. They also offer participants the opportunity to receive gun locks, firearms safes and medicine safes to promote lethal means safety at home and in their community.

After eight weeks of my cohort, I left feeling better prepared to see the signs and symptoms of a crisis. As my spouse and I navigated transition and our next phase of life, I was more confident in my ability to support him and his mental health because of Blue Star Support Circles. This free program changed my perspective and gave me the tools I need to prevent a crisis before it occurs.

VA Healthcare:  A Lifeline for Veterans

VA health care:  A lifeline for Veterans
Veteran-centric care means personalized health care you can trust without compromise.
Esther Yun, Communications Specialist,
VHA Office of Integrated Veteran Care

April 25, 2025

https://news.va.gov/139649/va-health-care-a-lifeline-for-veterans/

"VA is one of the unsung heroes," said David Cohen, a Navy Veteran who receives care at the
Manhattan VA Medical Center in New York City. Since filing his first medical claim with VA, Cohen has found a community of advocates—from fellow Veterans at the Virginia Department of Veteran Services where he was last stationed to his VA care team in New York City.

"I am very, very grateful… from the day I separated, I went to the New York VA, got my VA ID, and they were willing to see me right away," said Cohen. "I didn’t have my disability rated yet, but I was still able to receive all of the care that any Veteran can receive regardless of their disability rating… overall, my experience at VA has been relatively easy."

Care teams get Veterans
At VA, care teams get Veterans. They understand your medical history, your service and your life experiences. Many VA staff are Veterans themselves, and providers are specially trained to deliver care that’s tailored to your needs. VA’s health care team looks at the full picture of how your military experience and transition back to civilian life impacts your whole health. They work hard to make every VA facility a place where you feel seen, heard and respected.

"One of the first things that I got from VA were my hearing aids, and that was relatively immediate," said Cohen, who brought his dad along to the appointment. Receiving his hearing aids so quickly was one of the best parts of his early VA experience. "I trust my VA providers," he continued, recounting his experience with his VA audiologist who went above and beyond to not only attend to him, but even took time to answer questions from his dad.

"I was a weapons division officer when I was in the military, so [there were] a lot of loud bangs and a lot of machinery noises…" he added. "I looked it up, and my hearing aids are the same as the normal commercial market, which can cost north of $4,000."

VA’s mission is clear: To serve and honor America’s Veterans by providing them timely, high-quality care. Through VA facilities, the Veterans Community Care Program and other methods, like virtual care, VA delivers the care you have earned whenever and wherever you need it.

Faces of Freedom -- Those Who Defend Our Country

Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country

I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.

The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.

Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.

Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service.   All are about service to country and making sacrifices.

You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.
