Howard Goldin - Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency

Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency
(DPAA POW/MIA) -- Howard Goldin

Howard Goldin's
personal perspective as a Veteran  and Rotarian:

On September 19th I received a phone call asking if I can clear my calendar for September 22nd and help represent VVA at a POW/MIA artifact exchange, Veteran to Veteran turn over ceremony. The President of Vietnam, Luong Cuong will chair this event in Park Avenue Armory.

Representing the VVA POW/MIA will be the Chair, Grant Coates. Also representing VVA, invited guest Ned Foote, President,  NYS - VVA. Howard Goldin, Past President VVA-333 and NYS Delegate, Dominick Yezzo (NY) newly appointed Legal Director, VVA National and member of NY VVA.   All are pictured (left to right) in the photo.

After clearance was received through our side and the Vietnam Embassy Security, we were further advised that the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Luong Cuong requests our presence at a Special Commemorative Dinner on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Independence Day of Vietnam. Seated Dinner will be at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Ave. NY,

Our delegation was not informed as to which families would be receiving artifacts brought here by the Vietnamese Government. Our contact was with Jennifer Nasarenko, DPAA> Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, headed up by Mr. McKeague, AF Major General (Ret.)

Our dress is business attire with medals, no colored VVA logos or South Vietnamese flags should be displayed on clothing out of respect to the Vietnam Government.

At the ceremony we were shown a September 2, 1945 film in which Ho Chi Minh declared the Declaration of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam which mirrored ours. This occurred the same day Japan formally surrendered.

We were advised that there will be several families receiving artifacts. We were also informed that the first finding of a POW/MIA took place by the Vietnamese April 1985 and since then, there have been 756 recoveries. During Covid, the US shutdown operations but the Vietnamese still continued doing 30 missions with 16 recoveries.

The ceremony of the turnover was for three unaccounted for individuals whose artifacts were returned.

  1. Major James A. Magnusson, Jr. US Air Force. On April 4 1965 then Captain Magnusson was on a bombing mission over North Vietnam in at F-105. His plane was hit and was ditching over the Gulf of Tonkin. Searches of the area were unable to find his remains and he is still accounted for. Based on his case, Major Magnusson is Non-recoverable. His military ID card was located and turned over to a family member.

  1. SFC John Roberts Adams, US Army Served with the 189th Aviation Company. On November 8 1967 he was a crew chief flying a special forces insertion and was hit by enemy fire. Other crew members were able to escape but SFC Adams was not. SFC Adams case is listed as Active Pursuit, ID Card recovered and turned over to family.

  1. Major Eugene Lacy Wheeler, USMC served with the 24th Marine Observation Squadron and was piloting a OV-10A Bronco. During his mission over Quang Nam Province his aircraft was hit, ejected and not found. His case is listed as Active Pursuit and his Military Driver’s License was found, pending return to a family member.

  1. The Vietnamese also returned a dog tag belonging to SSGT Stanley Lawrence Lehrke, USAF, 16th Special Operations Squadron. Sgt. Lehrke was MIA June 18, 1972 and was accounted for in 1994.

Of note: Police Chief Dave Huffman, along with his wife Jeanie Huffman created “Mission POW/MIA”. Jeanie lost her dad CDR. Edward James Jacobs 8/25/67 somewhere near the Gulf of Tonkin.

From the American side, a Viet Cong unit flag and full flag with names was turned over to the Vietnam mission.

After the turn over ceremony there was approximately 12 Soldiers (Generals and lower) of the SRVN who fought us during the war and gave talks of their view and how tough we were as an adversary.

American Vietnam service members were called up and the oldest General and his aide presented us the SRVN Comrade pin showing we were all soldiers and now comrades. In my humble opinion it was given from one soldier to another, recognizing we were “comrades.”

There was a small talk by the son of General Giap talking about his father’s legacy and a call-in link video clip from Robert McNamara’s son talking about his father and what he did or did not do with regards to Vietnam. Also, on deck was one of VVA’s founding members, John F. Tararizo who gave his perspective of the War.

There was 300,000 Vietnam soldiers MIA and through the Veteran initiative it is down to 200,000.

The entire events from the Turn Over to the Dinner was a humbling experience and I thank VVA for allowing me to be part of this as my own personal journey continues……

Respectfully,
Howard Goldin
Past President VVA-333
NYS Council Delegate
Upcoming Classroom Exhibit

Note from Tom Carroll,  VVA #333 Secretary:
Last year, Ray Furlong and I attended a Veterans presentation at Pearl River Middle School.  The two of us, along with a number of other veterans spanning the years, and including a few Officers from West Point, set up in the library and over the course of about 2 1/2 hours met with various classes.  As this was our first one, Ray and I didn't bring any "memorabilia" other than a very small photo album that I managed to save from a flood in my prior residence.  Some of the other veterans brought things like helmets, flak jackets, etc.  The purpose of this note is twofold - to invite other members to attend this years event with us and/or to provide any "memorabilia" you may have that would be suitable for viewing by 4th - 6th graders.  The presentation will be on Friday, November 7th from 10:15 AM to 1:00 PM.  They will provide lunch and other refreshments.  Let me know if you would like to attend - I have to limit it to about 5 members.  If you have anything you think would be of interest to the students, let me know.  Even if you are not attending I would ask that you let me borrow it for the day.

VA Cut-Backs Due to Government Shut-down

#VetResources is a weekly newsletter for Veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors.

As you may be aware, funding for some government agencies, including portions of the Department of Veterans Affairs, expired the other day.

President Trump opposes a lapse in appropriations, and on September 19, the House of Representatives passed, with the Trump Administration’s support, a clean continuing resolution to fund the government through November 21. Unfortunately, Democrats are blocking this Continuing Resolution in the U.S. Senate due to unrelated policy demands.
During the current lapse in funding, the vast majority of VA benefits and services will continue uninterrupted, but the government shutdown is not without consequences to VA. Here is what you need to know:

The following critical Veterans care and assistance programs will be impacted by the government shutdown:

  • VA will not provide Veteran career counseling or transition assistance program activities.
  • The GI Bill Hotline will be closed.
  • VA regional benefits offices will be closed.
  • VA will cease public affairs and outreach to Veterans.
  • VA will not permanently place headstones or maintain the grounds at VA national cemeteries.
  • VA will not process applications for pre-need burials.
  • VA will not print new presidential memorial certificates.

Thankfully, the government shutdown will not impact the following VA services:
  • Veteran health care is not impacted. VA Medical Centers, Outpatient Clinics, and Vet Centers will be open.
  • VA benefits will continue to be processed and delivered, including compensation, pension, education, and housing benefits.
  • Burials will continue at VA national cemeteries. Applications for headstones, markers, and burial benefits processing will continue.
  • The Board of Veterans’ Appeals will continue decisions on Veterans’ cases.
  • VA Contact Centers (1-800-MyVA411) and the Veterans Crisis Line (Dial 988, Press 1) are open 24/7.

Faces of Freedom -- Those Who Defend Our Country

Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country

I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.

The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.

Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.

Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service.   All are about service to country and making sacrifices.

You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.

Walter Schuppe
