PTSD Hits Home Editorial by Jerry Donnellan -- November 2016
No one returns from war. Many feel they have. But there’s a piece missing. That piece is the soul, which seems never to make it all the way back.
There are times when you catch a glimpse of your old self, only to have it vanish like smoke. Combat, for all its horrors, is a place where you have never felt more alive — more alive than you’ve ever been or will be. Maybe it’s the nearness of death.
The friendships made there will never be seen again. These people who went with you to peer into hell, who would die for
you, as you would have for them.
No wonder you didn’t fit back into this world, where people fight for parking spots at the Mall. For you have lived in a better place — a world where wealth, prestige and status don’t matter, but character does.
We all have lost people. They are forever 19, frozen in time. You have seen your granddaughter walk, seen spring come again and again for nearly half a century. They never will, so it’s no wonder we have guilt.
We were all wounded. We all have scars. Some of these scars are not physical. These are the ones that can kill. The visible scars can be stitched. The others continue to bleed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- March 23rd, 2025 marks seven years since Jerry's
passing. Jerry and his legacy of helping veterans will never be forgotten. March 5th, 2025 is the 38th anniversary of the first meeting of the Vietnam Veterans, bringing together 64 Vietnam vets....the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #333 was formed, growing to more than 400 members at one point. The good works of this group continue as they help other veterans and the Rockland community. They were together then....they are together now. Thank you Veterans for your service to our Country and to our Community!

Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Program website: https://www.bridgesrc.org/programs-services/vet2vet/The Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Program is named in honor of Joseph P. Dwyer, a US Army Medic in the Iraq War who, in the earliest days of the invasion in 2003, was pictured cradling a wounded boy while his unit was fighting its way up the Euphrates to Baghdad. Dwyer’s post-war struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) resulted in his untimely and tragic death in 2008. The Dwyer Program was created by then-New York State Senator Lee Zeldin. It began in Suffolk County and has expanded to every county in New York State. Zeldin served four years in the Army active duty, deployed in 2006 to Tikrit, Iraq. Beginning in 2012, the Program now offers peer to peer counseling for Veterans suffering from PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and any Veteran looking to reintegrate into civilian society.

Helping Women Veterans and military spouses achieve Syracuse University’s D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) offers free entrepreneurship training programs for women
March 4, 2025 Keith Ryan Kappel D'Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families
Editor’s note: The sharing of any non-VA
information does not constitute an endorsement of products and services on the part of VA. Veterans should verify the information with the organization offering.
Syracuse University’s D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) has two programs aimed exclusively at helping women in the Veteran and military spouse community launch their entrepreneurial journeys. Both programs have helped hundreds of women launch businesses on stronger foundations, providing inspiration, education and a community of women who want to see them win.
“The training I received from the IVMF helped me sharpen my business skills and gain the actionable information I needed to get my business to the next phase,” said Rachel Bell, military spouse and owner of RBG Communications.
Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of
Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) The V-WISE program features a four-week online course that teaches business fundamentals, followed by a capstone in-person event.
Tricia-Ann B., who attended V-Wise Jacksonville said, “I found the breakout sessions to be extremely helpful for my growth. The life experience that was shared by the presenters was the most helpful. I appreciate the vulnerability that was shown, as well as the honesty. If I had to pay for all the information that was given this weekend, I couldn’t afford it.”
“The quality of the speakers, the information shared, the opportunity to network and connect with the speakers separately, and the ability to go back and re-watch the courses to assist in really absorbing the information. All of these things make this program worth its weight in gold. Additionally, the facilitators did an amazing job in ensuring everyone receives touch points, follow-up, and any other necessary information so this is an enriched experience full of connections beyond just the training program,” added Keyani M., a V-WISE Atlanta graduate.
Breaking Barriers in Entrepreneurship (BBiE) IVMF also offers the 8-week virtual Bunker Labs Breaking Barriers in Entrepreneurship (BBiE) three times a year, providing community and business fundamentals training. Malika H., a recent BBiE graduate said, “Breaking Barriers has been instrumental in my journey, providing me with the knowledge and tools to pivot my business model effectively. Through the workshop, I gained valuable insights into AI, raising capital and certifying my business. This program not only strengthened my understanding but also boosted my confidence, enabling me to drive my business
towards greater success. It truly transformed my approach to entrepreneurship, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the support and guidance they provided.”
Find the perfect free program for your business or idea IVMF has over a dozen entrepreneurship programs ready to meet Veterans and military spouses wherever they’re at in their entrepreneurial journey. It doesn’t matter if you have a business empire generating millions in revenue, an idea scribbled on a napkin
or anywhere in between. IVMF has a program that can help you move forward with a community of Veterans eager to see women Veterans and military spouses win.
Find out more about IVMF and their programs and join a community of Veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs by applying to V-WISE or Breaking Barriers today. Want to talk with graduates today? Follow IVMF on LinkedIn.

Faces of Freedom -- Those Who Defend Our Country

Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country
I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.
The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record
their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.
Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the
website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.
Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service. All are about service to country and making sacrifices.
You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.

As with all good books, be prepared to experience a lot of emotions with this: you will be intrigued, angry, surprised, maybe shed a tear or two, and laugh out loud at some of the shenanigans in this enjoyable tale of fact, fiction and myth.
