National POW/MIA Recognition Day - September 19th. 2025

|
National POW/MIA Recognition Day - September 19, 2025
In the United States, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday in September. It honors those who were prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action. It is most associated with those who were POWs during the Vietnam War. September 19th, 2025 will mark this year's observation of POW/MIA Recognition Day.
As of August 2025, there are 1,566 Americans still missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War. These numbers are tracked by the National League of Families of American Prisoners & Missing in Southeast Asia and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), with the total encompassing personnel missing in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and territorial waters of China. On August 5, 1964, during Operation Pierce Arrow, LTJG. Alvarez's Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was shot down in the immediate aftermath of what is known as the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Alvarez endured eight years and seven months of brutal captivity by the North Vietnamese at the Hỏa Lò Prison (sarcastically known as the "Hanoi Hilton"by fellow POWs), in which he was repeatedly beaten and tortured.[4] Alvarez was especially esteemed by his fellow prisoners because he was for almost a year the only aviator prisoner of war.

Reducing Suicide Risk for Rural Veterans

Reducing suicide risk for rural Veterans
Rural Veterans can learn how to create safe home environments
August 21, 2025
Dr. Matthew Miller
Executive Director, VA Suicide Prevention
When you think about rural living, you may picture quiet mornings, wide-open spaces, friendly neighbors and a slower pace of life. But just because rural life seems peaceful doesn’t mean it has no challenges. People in rural communities, including Veterans, die by suicide at higher rates than people in cities. Why? Rural areas tend to have higher suicide risk factors, like greater access to lethal means, higher economic distress, lower quality of health care and remoteness that can lead to feelings of isolation. None of these things mean a suicide crisis will happen. But because nearly five million rural Veterans are at higher risk, VA is working to make access to care easier. And we’re raising awareness about lethal means safety to make sure rural Veterans know how to create secure home environments. Breaking down
barriers to careVeterans live in rural communities for many reasons, including more privacy, lower cost of living, and less crowded towns and schools. One thing they may lack, though, is easy access to high-quality health care. VA’s Telehealth Services ensure you can find care when and where you need it. Here’s how it works:If you’re at home: Use your phone or computer to meet with VA providers and share your health information, like blood pressure or glucose levels. If you’re at a VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic: Connect to VA specialists in mental health, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology and more. If you’re in a VA medical center: Telehealth brings specialists into your room via video. Services like Tele-ICU and TeleStroke make sure you get expert care, even in emergencies. If VA
can’t offer the service you need in a timely manner, you might be eligible for VA Community Care, where you can see a provider in your local area. Just talk to your VA care team to see what’s possible. Creating a safe home environment can reduce suicide riskA lot of people think if someone is in a suicide crisis, they’ll find a way no matter what. But that’s not usually the case. Most people don’t switch to another method if the one they planned to use isn’t available. For example, if someone is thinking about using a firearm but it’s securely stored in a locked safe with the ammunition stored separately, they’re not likely to try something else. Even if they do choose another method, it’s probably going to be less lethal than a firearm and this increases their chance of surviving. One of the
most effective ways to reduce suicide risk is to put time and space between someone in crisis and a firearm. A suicide crisis is usually brief, so securely storing firearms can be an effective barrier between a suicide impulse and taking action. That’s why VA created the Keep It Secure program The message of Keep It Secure is straightforward: Simple actions—like using a gun lock, storing firearms in a locked case or safe, and storing firearms and ammunition separately and locked—can help keep you, your loved ones and your community safer. You can request a gun lock from the suicide prevention coordinator at your local VA medical facility. Reducing suicide risk for rural VeteransRural life offers a lot: connection to land, community and tranquility. With the right tools and support, like Telehealth Services,
Community Care and Keep It Secure, it can also be a place where Veterans stay safe and well.

Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country
I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.
The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record their
personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.
Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the website. I
hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.
Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service. All are about service to country and making sacrifices.
You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.
