2024 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report
How VA is taking action to prevent Veteran Suicide
2024 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report
March 15, 2025
Matthew Miller
Executive Director, Suicide Prevention

We recently released our 2024 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, which, in addition to data, highlights seven strategies we’re taking to support Veterans.

In this story—the first in a series of two—we’ll talk about the first two strategies we’re taking throughout the next year and beyond to meet Veterans where they are and with the resources they need.

Promoting secure firearm storage
With firearms being the most common means of suicide among Veterans, discussions about secure firearm storage are critical. Research shows a suicide crisis is usually brief, and securely storing firearms puts time and space between a Veteran and a firearm.
This can allow thoughts of suicide to decrease before a Veteran can access a firearm. It’s also important to remember most people attempting suicide won’t change their method if their attempt is interrupted. Meaning if a Veteran in crisis is trying to access a gun, a barrier could save their life as they’re less likely to try another means.

Keep It Secure provides Veterans, their families and communities with resources and information on how to securely store firearms. In addition, VA distributes free cable gun locks through VA medical centers, community organizations and local law enforcement agencies (find VA locations through our Resource Locator).

VA also offers VA S.A.V.E. training, which is a free, brief, online or in-person course that will help you provide care and compassion if you come across a Veteran who is in crisis or having thoughts of suicide.

Building and sustaining community collaborations
Our mission is to reduce Veteran suicide, but we can’t do it alone. That’s why we partner with groups across the country to reach as many Veterans as possible. Community-Based Interventions for Suicide Prevention (CBI-SP)works with nearly 2,500 local coalitions nationwide. Together, we provide resources and services in places where more than 70% of Veterans live.
CBI-SP focuses on identifying at-risk Veterans, promoting care transitions and enhancing safety planning. We recently launched new initiatives to address suicide among American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans who have some of the highest suicide rates among those who receive VA care.

CBI-SP has provided $4 million in cooperative agreements to increase reviews of health records to gather information to help prevent future Veteran suicides.

Through a partnership with the National Shooting Sports Foundation, we work with firearm retailers and range owners to encourage secure firearm storage practices. This provides effective actions Veterans and their loved ones can take during times of suicide crises to potentially save lives.

Ongoing and future efforts in Veteran Suicide Prevention
Supporting Veterans is a mission we all share. VA alone cannot end Veteran suicide. Together, we can create a compassionate, supportive network to empower Veterans, and to reassure them that help is available, they are valued and there is hope. Stay tuned for our next article, which highlights the next five strategies we’re focusing on in 2025.

2025 Freedom Award Honored Women in Service

Press Release -- Office of the Rockland County Executive -- March 24, 2025
New City, NY - County Executive Ed Day and Director Susan Branam of the Rockland County Veterans Service Agency recognized a female veteran with the Freedom Award Monday, an annual County honor made to female veterans for outstanding service to our nation.

"Acknowledging those who have worked and sacrificed to protect the freedoms we enjoy is crucial,” said County Executive Ed Day.  “Particularly women whose contributions to building and protecting our country have long been overlooked.”

The 2025 Freedom Award was presented to Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Veteran Elizabeth “Lisa” Rubio.

Rubio, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, served honorably from 2011 to 2019, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Throughout her career, she held key roles across multiple commands, including Marine Corps Recruiting Command and U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. A dedicated leader, she supported multinational training exercises, mentored recruits, and earned multiple commendations, including two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals.

After her military service, Lisa continued her commitment to others as a Veterans Service Officer in the County of Rockland, securing $12 million in benefits for local veterans and surviving spouses. Now pursuing a law degree, she remains devoted to advocacy and service.

“I am so proud to present this award to Lisa who not only has been a trailblazer as a female Marine, but a dedicated Veteran Service Officer, and now is completing her first year in law school. I have no doubt that she will continue to do well and serve as an inspiration to future generations,” said Veterans Service Agency Director Susan Branam.

“We thank Lisa for her bravery and continued commitment to our residents. We are proud to list your name among the women recipients of the Rockland County Freedom Award in years past,” concluded County Executive Day.

Faces of Freedom -- Those Who Defend Our Country

Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country

I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.

The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.

Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.

Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service.   All are about service to country and making sacrifices.

You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.

Walter Schuppe

Roy is a past President of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #333, and writes about a variety of experiences that our Vietnam vets encountered.  As with all good books, be prepared to experience a lot of emotions with this: you will be intrigued, angry, surprised, maybe shed a tear or two, and laugh out loud at some of the shenanigans in this enjoyable tale of fact, fiction and myth. All proceeds of "Endless" go to help veterans. The book is available in paperback or Kindle edition from Amazon:
