Charlie Maushardt It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Charlie Maushardt, former President of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #333 and the Nam Knights MC Hudson Valley Chapter. For as long as I've known Charlie, (almost 40 years) he has given so much of himself to help veterans and many others in the Rockland Community. He was a leader in every Vietnam veteran program -- raised awareness of the POW/MIA issue, Operation Homefront during Desert Shield / Desert Storm, the Clausland Watchfire, even cooking at VVA Stand-downs / Pig Roasts in the early days of the Chapter. Wherever he was needed, that's
where Charlie was. His passing is a tremendous loss -- personally -- as well as for his wonderful family and many friends.
There is definitely a special place in Heaven for Charlie... We were Blessed to have had him in our lives. Charlie died on September 29th, 2026 and is now at peace. We will remember him always....https://www.moritzfh.com/obituaries/charles-maushardt

| 2026 VA Federal Benefits Guide
|
|
|
Don’t know what VA benefits and care are available? Not sure which you’re eligible for? The annual Federal Benefits Guide provides information on benefits and services currently available by law and regulation.
The updated handbook contains a comprehensive listing of VA programs, including phone numbers and websites for easy reference. The Federal Benefits Guide hosts a wealth of information on most VA benefits and services, including:
- Compensation
- Life insurance
- Pension and fiduciary services
- Education benefits
- Economic development and employment
- Home loan guaranty programs and housing assistance
- Mental health resources
The handbook will help Veterans, service members and their families understand the full scope of available VA resources so that they can make the most of life after service. It provides details on eligibility requirements for each benefit, and because VA serves different generations of Veterans, outlines the qualification guidelines for distinct periods of service to clarify eligibility for Veterans with service spanning both peace and wartime periods.
The VA Federal Benefits Guide is available in both print and digital formats. Veterans and family members can access the booklet on VA’s website,
providing instant and convenient access to the wealth of information it contains. A limited number of printed copies may be available at your local medical center, Vet Center or regional office. To find the nearest VA facility, go to www.va.gov/find-locations.
The information in this guide is validated by VA as of Oct. 10, 2024. For the most up-to-date information, Veterans and family members should visit www.va.gov, or go to the specific links provided in this publication to access information on the program that they are interested in, as regulations, payments and eligibility requirements are subject to change. You can also call VA at 800-827-1000 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET
Monday through Friday to speak with a representative. https://news.va.gov/149864/2026-veterans-benefits-guide-available-online/

A Weekly Virtual Talking Circle for Women Veterans
|
|
|

Next session: Date & Time: Oct 7, 2026 11:00 AM i n Eastern Time (US and Canada) VA Editor’s note: The sharing of any non-VA information does not constitute an endorsement of products and services on the part of VA. Veterans should verify the
information with the organization offering.
Women Veterans are the fastest-growing group within the Veteran population. Many still encounter everyday barriers that make it difficult to stay connected to support: a canceled appointment because child care fell through, not knowing that assistance may be available to cover travel to a session, or simply not seeing their own experiences reflected in the room.
Televeda built a free resource around these barriers: another way for women Veterans to connect on their own time, alongside the care and support already available to them. It is a dedicated Virtual Talking Circle for Women Veterans, part of the Hero’s Story Project.
The circle meets every Tuesday at 3 p.m. Arizona time. It is held online through the Televeda platform, eliminating travel and the need to arrange child care around a clinic visit. Peers, rather than clinicians, lead the group. Participants set the pace and share only what feels right. The group is designed around the experiences of women Veterans, including survivors of military sexual trauma, rather than a combat narrative that may not reflect their service.
On Televeda’s Hero’s Story Project page, Jessica Roza of Arizona Veterans’ Services describes the group: "We have had women from Navajo County, Apache County, homebound Veterans who otherwise would not be able to meet, connect with other women Veterans and share," Roza said.
One participant who is disabled and homebound told facilitators that after joining a session, she felt "excited all week to get up in the morning and get out of bed." She said the group had become something to look forward to.
- Who is it for? Any woman Veteran seeking peer connection with people who understand her specific experiences.
- How do you join? Reserve a spot through the class schedule and join from a preferred device.
- What happens next? Participants join a weekly peer-led session rather than a clinical appointment. They set the pace and share only what feels right. Participants
who want assistance applying for VA benefits or enrolling in VA health care can ask a facilitator for guidance through the process.
The pattern is clear: When women Veterans have a space built around their experiences, they participate and stay connected. Televeda built that space.
Learn more through the Hero’s Story Project. Follow Televeda on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. Date & Time Oct 7, 2026 11:00 AM in Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Attention all Desert Shield and Desert Storm
Veterans!
We are looking to identify veterans in our Rockland County community who served during Operation Desert Shield or Operation Desert Storm.
Assemblyman Brian Maher and partner organizers are preparing a special Trip of Honor to Washington, DC from October 23rd to October 24th for the unveiling of the National Desert Storm/Desert Shield War Memorial. The trip includes transportation from the Hudson Valley, a one night hotel stay, meals, a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, and attendance at the official memorial unveiling ceremony. If we identify enough veterans from Rockland County, we might arrange a bus departing directly from our area.
If you have any questions about the trip or the application please reach out to Meghan Hurlburt: meghan.fescoe@gmail.com or call 845-391-5001.

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses for Visually Impaired Veterans
Suffern Free Library has announced a new partnership with TechSoup to distribute Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses to local honorably discharged and active-duty veterans living with significant visual impairments. Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country
I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.
The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record
their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.
Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the
website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.
Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service. All are about service to country and making sacrifices.
You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.
