| Christmas -- Post Vietnam
|
|
|
Editorial by Jerry Donnellan - 2015
CHRISTMAS - POST VIETNAM
Since I didn't do well on what turned out to be my last day in the jungles of Vietnam, I spent the next year in an Army Hospital. I would get out occasionally on weekends and holidays. Christmas 1969 was the first big family meal with all the relatives that I remember. The holiday might have a different name for you. However, I believe these dinners cut through every religion and nationality. I think we
were all in the same place at some time or other after we came home. By the same token I don't know if any of us came all the way home or if it was somebody else that came home in our place. For those of us who saw combat I'm sure you've seen this. We had come from a reasonably normal society into a combat zone where for a year we lived like animals hunting other people - killing them if you were good or lucky while they tried to kill you. Then all of a sudden you were dropped back on Main Street as if nothing had changed. Now at the ripe old age of 20 you're back and sitting around the Christmas table with
relatives, trying hard not to say, "Pass the f*****g salt," while Aunt Grace tells you that you look different and asks you what skills you learned while you were in the Army and that you should really be using the smaller fork for your salad. You secretly wonder what Aunt Grace would look like with a steak knife in the side of her neck. After all, that way you could demonstrate one of your new skills for everyone. Some at the table might even applaud, but you would mess up your Mom's new tablecloth, so that's out. We move on to Uncle Charlie who spent World War II in Fort Dix, New Jersey. He never heard a shot fired in anger, but is more than willing to tell you about the real war and how he knows just how you feel. Even the little kids in the family seem more annoying than usual…finally popping a balloon that goes right through you. You tried not to react but it isn't something you can control. Everyone gets quiet. Eyes dart around the room which makes you feel guilty. So you need to get out of the house for a while and see some of your old friends. But they too are different. Your friends seem childish in a way. And the old joint where you always hung out is different. Kind of uncomfortable. Even though you're sitting with your back to the wall where you can see both the exits while looking for something heavy that you could use as a weapon if trouble starts. What
trouble? You're home. You just need to give it a little time. You'll get back to your old self again. Sleep would help. Remember sleep? And dreams that weren’t from Hell? Well, a century has come and a century has gone and you're still waiting for that guy who went to Vietnam to come home. It's not going to happen. You don't jump at sudden noises as much - that's true. You don't have to have your back to the wall but you are more comfortable that way. And when was the last night's sleep you had? You don't drink as much as you did back in the day and surely you don't have PTSD….that's just for the weak or those who couldn't adjust or can't handle it. You came home, went to school, got a job, raised a family or two. You're okay. Well, I hope you got it right. If you haven't, something spooky is coming. Retirement. You know that thing you've been told you're looking forward to? For a time it'll be great. Playing golf whenever you want. But even golf gets old. You can watch TV. The History Channel now has Vietnam in HD. I keep watching it to see if I can figure out what I did wrong. You see, the problem is nature hates a vacuum. And that nice brick wall you built in your brain to keep the demons back so you wouldn't have to deal with them, well, short term memory is the mortar in that, and it’s starting to crumble. It may be time to deal with
them. May be time to deal with them before they deal with you. Understand, I'm not a psychologist, psychiatrist, doctor, Hell - I'm not even a good patient! I have however, been working with veterans since World War II veterans were our age. They didn't have PTSD either - or shell-shock or battle fatigue - because that would have meant they were crazy. First of all, PTSD or whatever you want to call it, like most everything comes in degrees. You can have it at 2%. You can have it at 100%. But I contend that no one who's been in combat isn't touched by it to some degree. If you weren't touched, that would
be crazy! It is simply a normal reaction to an abnormal set of circumstances and, like any other ailment, if not treated, odds are it will get worse. Face it - you've been wounded. It's just as real as a bullet wound. Actually worse. Bullet wounds are easy. They're visible. They can be stitched up. If they don't kill you they get treated and heal. This other thing is a psychic bullet. It doesn't leave a hole. But the spirit bleeds slowly. And yes you can bleed out. The suicide rate for our generation of veterans is up again. It's hard to wrap your head around the fact that something that hits you close to half a century ago is affecting you now. Seems unbelievable. After all, that's why the first word is Post. Jerry

A Marine Remembers Christmas Eve 1952
We sometimes get responses/comments from veterans after they've read our monthly newsletter. We always
welcome your feedback, and you can always find previous issues of our newsletter on the RockVets website at: http://www.rockvets.com/newsletters
About 6 years ago, one such response came from a local Korean veteran named Art Cooke, who sadly passed away in 2020. Art relayed a story that happened to him on Christmas Eve 2015. Art said this was one of the most surprisingly emotional experiences that he had ever had. We'd like to share it with our readers.
Here is Art's story....
"I ran out of my Chablis wine and didn't want to go to Shop Rite where I usually go, so I went to our local wine store (Mountain View in the lower Orangeburg Center) where the owners are
Korean. I walked into the store, knew where the Chablis was, and got a bottle. I went to the counter and there was a pleasant Korean man about 75 years old. He took my order and thanked me.
There was no one else there with us; if there were, I would just have walked out. But as I made my way out of the store I stopped, turned to him and said, 'You know, I was in your country in 1952 up by the Imjin River where it made a left turn west to go out to the sea.' [It was an age old corridor for the North to invade the South.] I said, 'Christmas Eve I spent all night in a frozen hole in the ground about 2 feet deep with a buddy, each of us doing 50 percent of the watch. It was snowing, we were 2 miles in front of our line preparing to block any attack and give time for the main line 2 miles to our rear, time to defend. The enemy set up loud speakers and played Bing Crosby's, "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" and they had a male with a British accent
telling us to "give up and come over to our side, we will treat you well..."
"I'll cut this short: we called Artillery and blew up their speakers!'
"By now the old man in the wine shop was just listening quietly. I said, 'Merry Christmas' and walked out of the store.
I just felt in the mood to tell this gentlemen I had been there. I walked 50 feet to my car and heard someone behind me saying: "Sir, Sir, please take this." He handed me a bottle of wine and said "Thank you, thank you very much. I was a little boy in 1952. I was 7 years old - Thank you!"
I shook his hand and was going to hug him if I could, but having keys in one hand I didn't. But for that one moment I felt the warmest "thank you" I ever felt.
I said: 'Thank you, Sir, Thank you for making this Christmas Eve special.' Someone thanked me for that lonely, home-sick, cold Christmas Eve, alone with another Marine - trying to stay warm in a frozen
hole in the ground in North Korea. 'Thanks, Sir,' I said, 'I'm happy we helped.' Amen." Art Cooke, Korean Veteran.

| VA Makes It Easier for Women to Access Gynecology Care

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACT vapublicaffairs@va.gov
VA makes it easier for women Veterans to access gynecology care 12/4/2025 1:30 p.m. ET
WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs today announced that women Veterans can now schedule appointments directly with VA gynecology providers without a referral from a primary care provider. The new, streamlined process takes effect today and eliminates the previous requirement for a PCP referral to access VA gynecology care. Instead, enrolled women Veterans can schedule an appointment directly with a VA gynecology specialist if they choose. The change will better serve the more than 1 million women Veterans who are enrolled in VA health care.
“This is what it looks like when VA is focused on putting Veterans first,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “By
relentlessly focusing on customer service and convenience, we are building a department that works better for the men and women we are charged with serving.”
Today’s announcement is the latest in a long list of VA accomplishments during the second Trump Administration, including:

GWOT 100: 1 mission. 1 month. 100 miles.
December 3, 2025
John Pinter
Deputy Director, Team Red, White & Blue
The sharing of non-VA information does not constitute an endorsement of products or services by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans should always verify information with the organization offering the program.
The Global War on Terror (GWOT) shaped the lives of millions of service members, Veterans and military families. The GWOT 100 is a new way to honor that era together—by moving our bodies, remembering our stories and staying connected.
GWOT 100 is a free, month-long, virtual challenge held each February. The mission is simple: complete 100 miles in 28 days. You can walk, run, ruck, hike, ride, swim or row—whatever works for your body and your life. Spread out over the month, it’s just a little over three miles a day, and you can break that up however you’d like.
This challenge is designed to be doable for anybody, whether you’re just getting started, rebuilding after an injury or illness or are already active.
It’s a great way to kick off a health journey if you’re just getting active again.
Created by Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB), the GWOT 100 builds on 15 years of community and camaraderie from the Taji 100 challenge. But this time, the miles are tied directly to the places and stories many Veterans know all too well.
For the first three years, GWOT 100 will focus on Iraq, starting in the Sunni Triangle this February and then moving to Southern and Northern Iraq. As you log your miles, you’ll move virtually through key locations, bases and events from the Global War on Terror. Along the way, you’ll encounter short stories and historical spotlights that bring those places to life: What happened there, who served there and how those experiences still echo today.
After the Iraq series, GWOT 100 will turn its attention to Afghanistan, continuing the journey through another theater that defined a generation of service as you traverse the
four Regional Commands.
At its core, GWOT 100 is about connection: To our own health, to each other and to the shared history of the GWOT era. You do it on your own, with a buddy or on a team. Many people choose to invite family and friends to join them, or engage in some (friendly) competition with another team.
Participation in GWOT 100 is free with paid options available.
All you need to do is sign up, start moving and let your miles become a way to remember, reflect and keep moving forward.

Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country
I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.
The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record
their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.
Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the
website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.
Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service. All are about service to country and making sacrifices.
You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.
