Editorial by Jerry Donnellan -- November 2016
No one returns from war. Many feel they have. But there’s a piece missing. That piece is the soul, which seems never to make it all the way back.
There are times when you catch a glimpse of your old self, only to have it vanish like smoke. Combat, for all its horrors, is a place where you have never felt more alive — more alive
than you’ve ever been or will be. Maybe it’s the nearness of death.
The friendships made there will never be seen again. These people who went with you to peer into hell, who would die for you, as you would have for them.
No wonder you didn’t fit back into this world, where people fight for parking spots at the Mall. For you have lived in a better place — a world where wealth, prestige and status don’t matter, but character
does.
We all have lost people. They are forever 19, frozen in time. You have seen your granddaughter walk, seen spring come again and again for nearly half a century. They never will, so it’s no wonder we have guilt.
We were all wounded. We all have scars. Some of these scars are not physical. These are the ones that can kill. The visible scars can be stitched. The others continue to bleed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- March 23rd, 2026 marks eight years since Jerry's passing. Jerry and his legacy of helping veterans will never be forgotten. March 5th, 2026 is the 39th anniversary of the first meeting of the Vietnam Veterans, bringing together 64 Vietnam vets. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #333 was formed, growing to more than 400 members at one point. The good works of this group continue as they help other veterans and the Rockland community. They were together then....they are together now. Thank you Veterans for your service to our Country and to our Community!

VA Research Wrap Up: New findings on telehealth, Parkinson’s disease and military transitions.
VA’s Office of Research and Development recently published three News Briefs highlighting research findings on telehealth kidney disease management, a potential treatment for Parkinson’s disease and a tool to help with transitioning from the military. https://news.va.gov/145206/va-research-parkinsons-disease-transitions/
VA’s telehealth kidney program is saving Veteran lives
A recent study found that Veterans whose kidney care was managed by a nephrologist via telemedicine had a 15% lower mortality rate than Veterans who had their kidney care managed by a primary care provider alone.
Veterans in the telenephrology program were also significantly more likely to be on guideline-directed medications.
Researchers studied nearly 12,000 Veterans with chronic kidney disease to determine the impact of VA’s telehealth program for specialty kidney care on Veterans living in rural areas. The program uses a hub-and-spoke design to connect Veterans with chronic kidney disease who are living far from VA medical centers to nephrologists via remote telemedicine access. The findings demonstrate how specialty outpatient care can be successfully delivered to rural Veterans using telehealth. View the full study from the "Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology."
Breathing treatment could help with Parkinson’s disease
VA New Mexico researchers and their colleagues discovered a way to flush unwanted proteins and waste products from the brain, highlighting a potential new treatment for Parkinson’s disease.
By administering breathing pulses of carbon dioxide, the researchers were able to stimulate a process that happens during deep sleep called glymphatic clearance, in which the body pumps cerebrospinal fluid across the brain to clear out potentially toxic waste products.
Glymphatic clearance is suppressed in people with Parkinson’s disease, which leads to a build-up of toxins in the brain. Three intermittent, 10-minute sessions of the CO 2 treatment led to increased levels of waste proteins in the blood of both patients with Parkinson’s disease and healthy controls, indicating these proteins had been cleared from the brain. The researchers believe this technique represents a promising new approach to improve brain health in people with Parkinson’s disease. View the full study from "NPJ Parkinson’s Disease."
Workshop offers tools for military transition difficulties
VA Boston and VA Houston researchers developed a tool to help Veterans adjust to civilian life after military service and better cope with mental health stressors.
In a pilot group of 184 Veterans, those participating in the STEP-Home program showed improved daily function and integration, as well as better impulse and anger control, when compared with Veterans receiving the standard present-centered group therapy.
The STEP-Home workshop was delivered in 12 voluntary, 90-minute group sessions. The sessions were designed to provide a concrete framework for understanding emotions, thoughts, and behaviors resulting from stressors. Workshop leaders provided strategies to solve problems with the goal of self-awareness, a sense of agency, impulse control, and control over one’s own behavior. The results suggest STEP-Home could offer an efficient method of helping Veterans struggling with reintegration into civilian life. View the full study from "Behavior Therapy."

and Early MenopauseHOME Training for VA Health Care Providers
Military Environmental Exposure Assessments
How It Works:
Expert Evaluation: A specially trained VA clinician will review your exposure history and address any concerns.
Documentation: Your exposure history will be recorded in your electronic health record.
Follow-Up: You’ll receive medical guidance and follow-up recommendations via email or letter.
Scheduling a MEEA:
No referral is needed, though your VA care team may recommend one.
Choose between in-person (may have limited times and copay) or telehealth (free and widely available).
Evaluation Pathways for Military Environmental Exposures
VA provides multiple ways to evaluate and address your military environmental exposures:
Available every 5 years for Veterans enrolled in VA health care.
Takes about 5-10 minutes with a health care provider.
Starts a conversation about your exposures and connects you to appropriate resources.
In-depth clinical evaluation to follow up on concerns identified during a TES.
Conducted by VA clinicians with specialized training.
Choose between in-person or telehealth appointments.
Free, voluntary medical assessments for Veterans exposed to environmental hazards during service.
Available to Veterans with specific service dates and locations.
Helps VA understand and care for similar Veterans as a group.
Assesses disabilities and determines eligibility for disability compensation.
Evaluates whether claimed medical conditions are connected to military service.
Conducted by VA medical professionals or private contractors.
Research Findings: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Gulf War Illness, and Early Menopause
In a study of Gulf War Era women Veterans, VA researchers found that 1990-1991 Gulf War Era women Veterans with PTSD or Gulf War Illness (GWI) were more likely to experience early menopause. The Gulf War Era Cohort Study, which followed nearly 700 women from the 1990-1991 Gulf War in 1995 and again in 2012, observed a higher prevalence of early menopause among those meeting criteria for PTSD or GWI in 1995 compared to those without.
Key Findings:
PTSD in 1995: Prevalence of early menopause was 25.3%, compared to 12.3% without PTSD.
GWI in 1995: Prevalence of early menopause was 19.2%, compared to 12.3% without GWI.
Early menopause (before age 45) is linked to health risks like premature mortality, poor bone health, and cardiovascular disease. If you are a 1990-1991 Gulf War Era woman Veteran who has experienced early menopause, discuss potential health impacts with your provider.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs today announced a major new step to protect Veterans’ Second Amendment rights. Effective immediately, VA will not report Veterans to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System as "prohibited persons" only because they need help from a fiduciary in managing their VA
benefits.
This corrects a three-decade-old wrong that deprived many thousands of Veterans in VA’s Fiduciary Program of their constitutional right to own a firearm without a legal basis.
After a thorough review, VA recognized that many Veterans had been deprived of their Second Amendment rights without hearings or adequate determinations that they posed a sufficient risk of danger to themselves or others. In consultation with the Department of Justice, VA has determined this practice violates both the Gun Control Act and Veterans’ Second Amendment rights. According to federal law, a decision by a judicial or quasi-judicial body is needed before someone can be
reported to NICS.
A determination by the VA that a fiduciary is needed to help manage a Veteran’s VA benefits falls far short of this legal standard.
In addition to immediately stopping the reporting of VA Fiduciary Program participants to NICS, the department is working with the FBI to remove all past VA reporting from NICS, so no Veterans are unfairly deprived of their Second Amendment rights based solely on participation in VA’s Fiduciary Program.
"Many Americans struggle with managing their finances, and
Veterans’ Second Amendment rights shouldn’t be stripped just because they need help in this area. But for too long, Veterans who needed the services of a VA fiduciary were deprived of their right to bear arms," said VA Secretary Doug Collins. "Under the leadership of President Trump, we’re correcting this injustice and ensuring Veterans get the same due-process and constitutional rights as all Americans."
The Department of Justice supports this action. "It is both unlawful and unacceptable for Veterans who serve our country to have their constitutional rights threatened," said
Attorney General Pamela Bondi. "It has been my pleasure to partner with Secretary Collins on this project, and I am directing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to review its regulations and propose changes that will prevent current and future violations of our Veterans’ Second Amendment rights."

Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country
I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.
The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record
their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.
Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the
website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.
Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service. All are about service to country and making sacrifices.
You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.
