Story of The Four Chaplains - February 3rd, 1943
|
|
|
Tragedy at Sea The sinking of the USAT Dorchester on February 3, 1943, was a tragic event during World War II, caused by a German torpedo attack.
It was the evening of February 2nd, 1943, and the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was crowded to capacity, carrying 902 service men, merchant seamen and civilian workers.
Once a luxury coastal liner, the 5,649-ton vessel had been converted into an Army transport ship. The Dorchester, one of three ships in the SG-19 convoy, was moving steadily across the icy waters from Newfoundland toward an American base in Greenland. SG-19 was escorted by Coast Guard Cutters Tampa, Escanaba and Comanche.

Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Program website: https://www.bridgesrc.org/programs-services/vet2vet/The Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Program is named in honor of Joseph P. Dwyer’s post-war struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) resulted in his untimely and tragic death in 2008. The Dwyer Program was created by then-New York State Senator Lee Zeldin. Best of 2024: Top VetResources of the year
January 29, 2025
Veterans Experience Office
VA News Editor’s note: The sharing of any non-VA information does not constitute an endorsement of products and services on the part of VA. Veterans should verify the information with the organization offering. Every week, VA sends a newsletter that is jam-packed with resources like free concert tickets, health care and claims benefits information, workout programs, national park passes and Veteran discounts on hundreds of services. VA makes no endorsements of privately offered resources, but we share them to generate awareness of all that’s available to the Veteran community. Here are the Top 10 most popular Veteran resources from 2024:1. Veteran discounts available year
roundThis is a list of Veteran and military discounts that are good year-round and updated as we learn of more. These discounts are shared so Veterans, military members, their families, caregivers and survivors are aware of all resources available to them. 2. Physical fitness resources to ignite a healthier futureRegular exercise provides a sense of routine and discipline, which helps with adaptation outside the military environment. Fitness contributes to long-term health, helps manage stress and improves overall quality of life. Here are some popular fitness resources for Veterans to get started on the road to a happy, healthy you. 3. Everything you need to know about VA urgent
care servicesMany Veterans may not be aware of life-changing benefits they’ve earned—and deserve—through military service. This outreach kit about VA urgent care services includes flyers, social media graphics and suggested corresponding language, radio public service announcements (PSA), newsletter content and a sample blog post to help you spread the word. 4. Veteran travel 101: Applying for travel reimbursementIf you do need a face-to-face appointment, you may incur a cost to travel to see a provider. Did you know you may be eligible for reimbursement of some or all of those travel expenses? VA’s travel reimbursement program can help. 5. Check your Veteran Health
Identification CardThe Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) is not required to receive VA health care, but it is beneficial to quickly check in for your VA appointments. Learn how to renew your VHIC online. 6. Buddy Finder provides a faster method to find former service friendsTogetherweserved.com (TWS)’s Buddy Finder was created specifically to help Veterans find those they served with. The site has more than 2.3 million members in five separate service branch websites, and TWS has possibly reconnected more Veterans than any other site or organization. 7. DOD Installation access simplified: Three updates for Veterans and caregiversVeterans and eligible caregivers
now have easier access to Department of Defense (DOD) installations. The updated process announced by VA and DOD in November 2024, and has streamlined enrollment and access to installations. More information can be found in DOD’s fact sheet. 8. VA improves access to claims informationVA’s Claim Status Tool allows Veterans to view the status of their VA claims online using their VA.gov login. This tool displays which claims are in process and identifies any actions Veterans need to take. It also gives Veterans the ability to review recent claim activity. 9. Veterans exposed to toxins and other hazards during service now eligible for VA health careIn one of the largest-ever
expansions of Veteran health care, all Veterans exposed to toxins and other hazards during military service—at home or abroad—are now eligible for VA health care. 10. Disaster assistance and resources for VeteransFor the latest updates and information, visit VA’s Disaster Help website. As we face natural disasters like tornados, wildfires and historic flooding, it’s important for Veterans and their families to know that VA is here to help. VA Expands Access to Veterans Legacy Memorial

VA expands access to Veterans Legacy Memorial, allowing Veterans to chronicle their life story
January 16th, 2025
WASHINGTON — Today, the Department of Veterans Affairs expanded the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) — the nation’s largest digital platform dedicated to the memory of Veterans and service members — to allow Veterans to tell their own story before they pass away. The new “Your Story, Your Legacy” feature will allow Veterans who have been approved for VA’s pre-need eligibility determination for burial in a VA national cemetery to log in to a secure website where they can privately submit images, autobiographies, military and life milestones, and
historical documents.
VLM already offers family, friends, and others a way to chronicle the life of a Veteran by uploading written tributes, photos, biographies, documents, and other information. It contains nearly 10 million interactive VLM pages for those interred in VA national cemeteries, Department of Defense-managed cemeteries, VA grant-funded state/tribal cemeteries, National Park Service cemeteries, and private cemeteries around the
world.
VA will keep a Veteran’s content secure until they pass away and VA approves a request for a burial or memorial benefit. Following approval, the content the Veteran submitted will become public and appear on their VLM page on the public-facing website.
“The legacies we leave behind come in many forms,” said Acting Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Ronald Walters. “Providing Veterans with resources to document their stories while they are still with us ensures their voices are heard and allows family members, friends, and others to appreciate the experiences of those who
served.”
Veterans who have provided their email address and been approved for pre-need eligibility will receive an email directing them to the “Your Story, Your Legacy” landing page. Here’s where to apply online. For more information about the feature. visit the Your Story, Your Legacy landing page.
Since the VLM website launched in 2019, more than 165,000 submissions have been made to Veteran profile pages. NCA moderators review all content submissions before being posted to a Veteran’s page to ensure it conforms to the VLM User Policy.

Gold Star Families Voices Act

|
Gold Star Families Voices Act
The 2016 Gold Star Families Voices Act expanded the original scope of the Veterans History Project to also include oral histories by immediate family members (parent, spouse, sibling, or child) of “members of the Armed Forces who died as a result of their service during a period of war.” Due to the sensitive nature of the Gold Star oral histories, the Veterans History Project requires a minimum age of 18 for both the interviewers and the interviewees.
The Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress collects, preserves and makes accessible the firsthand recollections
of U.S. military veterans who served from World War I through more recent conflicts and peacekeeping missions, so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand what they saw, did and felt during their service. The Veterans History Project (VHP) offers a number of special events, exhibits, discussion
panels, webinars and more which highlight the collection and provide a platform for veterans and those whose work supports them to share their insights with the public. Engage with VHP in person or online, and stay in the know through a host of news releases, event videos and webinars. Check back frequently, as there is always something new to view and explore.
Webinars Watch webinars designed to keep you well-versed on military history and veterans’ experiences, as well as some of the innovative processes that the Veterans History Project (VHP) uses to keep these priceless collections preserved and accessible for future generations. Webinar presenters are listed below as contributors.
View the Library of Congress website for further information regarding the Veterans History Project and Gold Star Families Voices Act: https://www.loc.gov/programs/veterans-history-project/news-and-events/webinars/
Veterans from all branches and ranks who served at any point since World War I are eligible to participate in the Veterans History Project, [and
Gold Star Families Voices Act] even if they did not see combat. Anyone, including students ages 15 or older, may volunteer to record an oral history interview or gather and donate a veteran’s original photographs, correspondence or other materials. Veterans may also chose to submit their own collection materials to the Library of Congress. VHP is a grassroots effort and reliant on voluntary participation of people around the country interviewing the veterans in their lives and communities. In our “how-to” video we show you everything you need to create your own VHP interview which will be preserved for future generations in the Library of Congress.

Lee Zeldin confirmed to lead Trump's Environmental Protection Agency
The Senate voted Wednesday afternoon to confirm Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency https://www.foxnews.com/video/6367954357112
President-elect Donald Trump’s EPA pick, Lee Zeldin, a former New York congressman, pledged to protect both the environment and the economy while strictly interpreting the
nation’s clean air and water laws.
The Senate voted on Wednesday to confirm former Rep. Lee Zeldin to head the government's leading agency on environmental rules and regulations.
President Donald Trump tapped Zeldin, who previously served as a congressman from New York's 1st Congressional District from 2015 to 2023, to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under his administration. During his tenure in Congress, Zeldin, an Army Reserve lieutenant colonel, launched a campaign for governor in New York, when he trailed only five percentage points in the largely Democratic state.
Zeldin underwent a confirmation hearing earlier this month, when he was questioned on climate change by members of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country
I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.
The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record
their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.
Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the
website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.
Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service. All are about service to country and making sacrifices.
You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.
