Rockland County Honors 23rd Anniversary of 9/11 Wednesday, September 11th, 2024: There will be many ceremonies honoring those lost on 9/11. Please check your Towns and Villages for local services.
HAVERSTRAW, NY – https://rocklandnews.com/sept11-memorial-2024/Rockland County will mark the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a solemn memorial ceremony in the Town of Haverstraw, inviting the community to join in remembrance. The event will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 8:30 AM at Haverstraw Bay County Park.
County Executive Ed Day, along with family members, clergy, first responders, and other community leaders, will gather to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic events of 9/11. The ceremony will include the reading of the names of Rockland County residents who perished that day, ensuring that their memory is kept alive within the community.
The observance will
feature a series of tolling bells, each marking significant moments during the attacks. At 8:46 AM, a bell will toll in remembrance of the moment the North Tower of the World Trade Center was struck. A second toll will follow at 9:03 AM, marking the time when the South Tower was hit. Additional bells will toll in honor of the attack on the Pentagon, the crash of Flight 93 in Shanksville, PA, the collapse of both the South and North Towers, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
The community is encouraged to arrive by 8:15 AM to ensure timely participation in this important tribute. This annual ceremony serves not only as a reminder of the tragic events but also as a testament to the enduring strength and unity of the Rockland County community.

87,000 Vietnam Veterans May Qualify for $844 Million in Benefits. How Come Nobody Told Them?
A Report Blames VA for Failing to Notify Vets Sickened by Agent Orange. But That's Not the Biggest Problem: A Budget Crisis is Already Threatening Payments in October to Millions of Vets AUGUST 29, 2024| LEAH ROSENBAUM In the span of just a few weeks, Marc McCabe traveled this summer to Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, California, and Texas. But the 74-year-old wasn’t on an epic retirement trip. As a pro bono veterans advocate, he was searching for Vietnam veterans and surviving family members who may be eligible for disability compensation. McCabe, a former combat corpsman attached to
Marine Corps units during the Vietnam War, has survived two bouts of cancer himself. He has been a veteran’s advocate for two decades, but his job has gotten a lot busier thanks to a spate of new legislation that has expanded benefits for millions of veterans exposed to toxic chemicals in war. Technically, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs should be the ones notifying veterans when they may be eligible for new benefits—but McCabe says they often don’t. "They’re leaving them behind," he says. And the Department of Veterans Affairs’ very own Office of Inspector General agrees. In an unsparing report this summer, the watchdog estimated that VA has failed to inform up to 87,000 Vietnam war veterans and their survivors that they may now qualify for retroactive compensation benefits because of exposure to toxic herbicides such as Agent Orange. Faces of Freedom -- Those Who Defend Our Country
|
|
|
Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country
I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.
The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record
their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.
Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the
website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.
Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service. All are about service to country and making sacrifices.
You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.
