For Memorial Day, the Vetiquette program administered by Maureen Kelly organized The Poppy Project in the South Orangetown School District Elementary schools, Cottage Lane Elementary and William O Schaefer Elementary. Approximately 1000 students made craft poppies and two South Orangetown Middle School students, Michael Pemba and Joey Backiel, helped to plant the poppies in the rain on Friday evening in a display in front of the Vietnam Memorial in Veterans Park in Orangeburg to honor the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War as well as the fallen who did not return home. In one of the breaks in the rain, a rainbow came out!

81st Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion
|
|
|

"We must never forget how these boys fought like men. The world needed freedom, and they we're up to the task. They never complained, never flinched, never faltered. And then they went home and quietly led good lives. I was proud to do my part." -- Dick Winters, WWII legend.
God Bless forever and always the brave young souls who gave their lives on D-Day to secure our freedom.
Check out this video on the Medal of Honor recipients from
D-Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lewBKVoDtdM
Many of the troops who landed in Normandy on D-Day spent some time at Camp Shanks. The Camp Shanks Museum was established to honor those who served in World War II. It was dedicated on the 50th Anniversary of D-Day -- June 6, 1996.
Camp Shanks Museum commemorates the largest World War II embarkation camp on America’s East Coast. Camp Shanks is located at 20 Greenbush Road in Orangeburg (behind the Orangetown Building Department and Orangeburg Library).
Camp Shanks served as a point of embarkation for troops departing overseas during World War II. Dubbed “Last Stop USA”, the camp
housed about 50,000 troops spread over 2,040 acres and was the largest World War II Army embarkation camp, processing 1.3 million service personnel including 75% of those participating in the D-Day invasion. In 1945 Camp Shanks housed German and Italian prisoners of war.
After the war, Camp Shanks was converted into housing for veterans with families attending colleges and universities in the New York City area under the GI Bill; the settlement, then known as Shanks Village, closed in 1954. A small museum opened near the site in June 1994.
Hours: June, July & August – Saturdays and Sundays 11 am – 3 pm
If anyone has information about Camp Shanks or Shanks Village that they would like to share, please contact John Gray, Director of the Camp Shanks Museum at (845) 304-6809.

Faces of Freedom -- Those Who Defend Our Country

Faces of Freedom -- Oral Histories and Portraits of the Men and Women that Defend Our Country
I never served in the military, and I never had to make the sacrifices US military veterans have made. I decided I wanted to do something to show my gratitude to our veterans and I began my project which I call Faces of Freedom.
The project consists of interviews and photographs. I meet with veterans, record
their personal history, and take their photo. I print the photo in black and white, frame it and present it to each veteran at no charge. The interview covers each veteran’s life before, during and after their time in the service. Each veteran has the opportunity to make any changes to their bio before it is finalized. I make no money from this project and the photos are free to each veteran.
Currently these photos and bios appear on my website www.facesoffreedom.us. They also appear on my Facebook page and the photos and stories of the WWII veterans have been sent to the National WWII Museum for their archives. There are currently 80 interviews and photos on the
website. I hope to make this into an exhibit for universities, high schools, community centers, libraries, etc. to help increase awareness of the 3% of the population who is doing the heavy lifting so the rest of us can enjoy all that this country has to offer.
Every veteran has a story. Some stories are about combat, some are about funny memories, some stories are sad, and some are about things accomplished after their military service. All are about service to country and making sacrifices.
You have a story and I want to tell it to the rest of the people in the United States. Let’s pick a date and get together to record your history and tell it to our fellow citizens.
