U.S. Marines Arrive in Mogadishu, Somalia 30 Years Ago

This Day in History:
30th Anniversary of U.S. Marines' Arrival in Mogadishu, Somalia

On December 9, 1992, 1,800 United States Marines arrive in Mogadishu, Somalia, to spearhead a multinational force aimed at restoring order in the conflict-ridden country.

For source of article, view this link: U.S. Marines Arrive in Mogadishu, Somalia

Following centuries of colonial rule by countries including Portugal, Britain and Italy, Mogadishu became the capital of an independent Somalia in 1960. Less than 10 years later, a military group led by Major General Muhammad Siad Barre seized power and declared Somalia a socialist state. A drought in the mid-1970s combined with an unsuccessful rebellion by ethnic Somalis in a neighboring province of Ethiopia to deprive many of food and shelter. By 1981, close to 2 million of the country’s inhabitants were homeless. Though a peace accord was signed with Ethiopia in 1988, fighting increased between rival clans within Somalia, and in January 1991 Barre was forced to flee the capital. Over the next 23 months, Somalia’s civil war killed some 50,000 people; another 300,000 died of starvation as United Nations peacekeeping forces struggled in vain to restore order and provide relief amid the chaos of war.

In early December 1992, outgoing U.S. President George H.W. Bush sent the contingent of Marines to Mogadishu as part of a mission dubbed Operation Restore Hope. Backed by the U.S. troops, international aid workers were soon able to restore food distribution and other humanitarian aid operations. Sporadic violence continued, including the murder of 24 U.N. soldiers from Pakistan in 1993. As a result, the U.N. authorized the arrest of General Mohammed Farah Aidid, leader of one of the rebel clans. On October 3, 1993, during an attempt to make the arrest, rebels shot down two of the U.S. Army’s Black Hawk helicopters and killed 18 American soldiers.

As horrified TV viewers watched images of the bloodshed—including footage of Aidid’s supporters dragging the body of one dead soldier through the streets of Mogadishu, cheering—President Bill Clinton immediately gave the order for all American soldiers to withdraw from Somalia by March 31, 1994. Other Western nations followed suit. When the last U.N. peacekeepers left in 1995, ending a mission that had cost more than $2 billion, Mogadishu still lacked a functioning government. A ceasefire accord signed in Kenya in 2002 failed to put a stop to the violence, though a new parliament was convened in 2004.

Wealth - An Editorial by Roy Tschudy
Editorial from Roy Tschudy
WEALTH -- WHAT IS REAL WEALTH?

FOR EACH OF US WEALTH MAY BE DEFINED IN A FEW DIFFERENT MANNERS. ALL OF US, NO MATTER WHO WE ARE NOW, ENTERED INTO THIS WORLD THE SAME WAY, HEADFIRST, AND FOR THE MOST PART ALL OF US WILL LEAVE THIS WORLD THE SAME WAY IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

IN THE VERY SMALL TIME FRAME OF OUR LIVES, WHAT SHOULD MATTER MOST IS WHAT WE DO IN THAT LIFETIME TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE FOR OUR CHIDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN.

LIFE IS A GIFT, A BEAUTIFUL OFFERING FROM OUR CREATOR, IT SHOULD BE EMBRACED, APPRECIATED AND SHARED. THE WEALTH WE ACCUMULATE CAN BE DESCRIBED IN MONETARY WAYS, EDUCATION, PRIVLEGE, HEALTH AND LOVE ALONG WITH A HOST OF OTHERS AS WELL.

IF WHAT YOU HAVE, WHAT YOU NEED AND WANT, SEEMS TO BE LACKING OR NOT ENOUGH, IF YOUR FRIENDS OR NEIGHBORS SEEM TO HAVE MORE THAN YOU IN THAT VEIN, I SUGGEST YOU CONSIDER WHAT YOUR REAL WEALTH TRULY IS.

DOES A SOCIALITE MOTHER WHO SPENDS HER TIME AWAY ON EXTRAVAGANT VACATIONS OR ATTENDING DINNER PARTIES, WHILE HER HIRED NANNY WATCHES OVER HER CHILDREN, HAVE TRUE WEALTH? OR THE MOM WHO MAKES A PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH FOR HER CHILDREN AND TUCKS THEM IN BED AT NIGHT WITH A HUG AND KISS HAVE MORE WEALTH?

THE FATHER WHO IS A CORPORATE EXECUTIVE TOO BUSY TO ATTEND A BIRTHDAY PARTY, A GRADUATION, AND SIMPLY SENDS A CHECK FOR A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY TO HIS CHILD, IS HE A MAN OF WEALTH?  AS OPPOSED TO A DAD WHO HAS A CATCH WITH HIS SON OR HELPS PUTS NAIL POLISH ON HIS LITTLE GIRL’S NAILS PLAYING “DRESS UP” THE WEALTHIER OF THE TWO?

WHAT IS IMPORTANT AND RELEVENT TO ONE MAY NOT BE FOR ANOTHER. AGAIN, WHAT IS WEALTH AND HOW IS IT MEASURED? NONE OF US NEED TO LOOK AT ANOTHER AND WISH WE HAD WHAT IS THEIRS, SOMETIMES THE WEALTH IN YOUR VERY OWN LIFE IS WORTH MUCH MORE THAN SOME WHO SEEM TO HAVE IT ALL.

IF YOUR GLASS IS HALF EMPTY THEN TAKE A CLOSER LOOK, THINK OF WHAT YOU HAVE, NOT WHAT YOU DON’T HAVE. APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS THAT BRING A SMILE TO YOU, THINGS THAT TOUCH YOUR HEART.

EACH AND EVERYONE OF US HAVE WEALTH IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER, SOMETIMES ALL WE NEED TO DO IS JUST OPEN OUR EYES AND SEE THAT YOUR VERY OWN WEALTH IS STARING RIGHT BACK AT YOU LIKE AN OLD FRIEND. WEALTH, IT’S ALL HOW YOU MEASURE IT.

Last VVA #333 Fundraising Event for This Year

Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #333

On Friday, December 16th, 2022 and Saturday, December 17th, 2022, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #333 will hold their last fundraiser of the year at the Palisades Center Mall.  VVA Chapter members will once more be in the same location in the vicinity of the CHEESECAKE FACTORY  on the first floor, between 08:30-1700 hours.

As always is the case, all members are encouraged and welcome to attend for as little or as much time you choose.   Chapter volunteers present once again did a wonderful job interacting with the shoppers and promoting veterans' efforts and projects.

Receiving funds is only one small part of the equation in our fundraising efforts.  Educating people on Vietnam soldiers' history, during and the aftermath, thanking donors and being thanked in return by so many shoppers, sharing personal stories not only with those who are sincere in questions for us, but the comradery shared between the chapter volunteers as well, is memorable for us.

If you are at the Palisades Mall on December 16th or 17th, stop by and say hello to this fine group of veteran volunteers!

Hand Cycle Program Now a VVA #333 Legacy

Successful Hand Cycle Program Now a VVA #333 Legacy

Pictured:  Sarah Bettancourt, U.S. Navy Pilot, Spinal Cord Injury February 2017

After a long and successful run, the VVA #333 Hand Cycle Program will now be a part of the Chapter 333's Legacy.  Currently we are in the process of purchasing and donating a Hand Cycle to an Air Force veteran who, as all previous recipients, has met the vetting process and has been deemed eligible. Our program has a little over $15,000 remaining, however, the cost of this new cycle will be in the $12,000 range leaving us with a few thousand for the program.

As the costs have risen fast and high, it would not be possible for us to maintain enough funds for future candidates.  We would have to fund raise almost every weekend to create enough funds, and that isn't feasible. So with both a bit of sadness, yet mixed with pride for what we have accomplished over the ten years on this project, we will no longer be fund raising for, or accepting any new candidates, for our Hand Cycle program.

Over the years, many if not all the Chapter members have contributed to the success of our program in one form or another. We have spent well over $100,000 on Hand Cycles, two Trike Bikes, Two Mountain Bikes, an Outrigger Canoe, a Kayak along with personal equipment needed for these disabled men and women veterans.

The program has been inclusive of men and women alike, injured veterans from all over the country covering New York to Florida to California and other parts of the United States. What we created and accomplished went beyond our wildest hopes and dreams, acknowledging that we as a chapter, made a "difference" in the life of a veteran in need, and it is something all of us should be proud of.

Fundraising will still continue at street fairs, the Mall or wherever the case may be for our Chapter to continue on in other endeavors. The Hand Cycle program may be over, but VVA Chapter #333 continues on!   Roy Tschudy, VVA #333

VA Pact Act Week of Action to Inform Veterans
VA PACT Act Week of Action to Inform Veterans and Survivors About New Health Care and Benefits

https://www.va.gov/opa/pressrel/pressrelease.cfm?id=5847

December 9, 2022:  VA launches national PACT Act Week of Action to inform Veterans and survivors about new health care and benefits.  VA to host 90+ events across all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico to inform Veterans about the PACT Act, which President Biden signed into law Aug. 10, 2022.

WASHINGTON — This weekend, VA will kick off a PACT Act Week of Action to inform Veterans, their families, and survivors about the PACT Act and encourage them to apply for the health care and benefits they have earned.

Between December 10th and 17th, 2022, VA will host more than 90 Week of Action events across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. These events will feature Veterans, Veteran families and survivors, VA leaders, members of Congress, local elected officials, Veterans Service Organizations, state directors of Veterans Affairs and more — all of whom are working together to spread awareness about the new health care and benefits available to Veterans and survivors. Many of these events will have VA staff present to help Veterans apply for benefits, get screened for toxic exposures and enroll in VA health care.

"There are millions of Veterans and survivors across America who are eligible for new health care and benefits, and we will not rest until every one of them gets what they’ve earned,” said Denis McDonough, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “That’s what this PACT Act Week of Action is all about: educating Veterans, their families and survivors — and encouraging them to apply today.”

A full list of events can be found here:
https://news.va.gov/111511/va-host-town-halls-pact-act-week-of-action/.

The PACT Act is the largest expansion of Veteran health care and benefits in decades. Since President Biden signed it into law Aug. 10, more than 176,000 Veterans have applied for PACT Act-related benefits and more than 503,000 Veterans have received the new toxic exposure screenings, with nearly 39% reporting a concern of exposure.

The PACT Act Week of Action is just one component of VA’s nationwide PACT Act Veteran outreach campaign, which is the largest coordinated outreach campaign in VA history. The campaign has one goal: ensuring every eligible Veteran and survivor gets the PACT Act-related health care and benefits they have earned.

Highlights of the campaign to date include:
VA.gov/PACT: Within one hour of the Senate passage of the PACT Act, VA launched VA.gov/PACT — a one-stop-shop for Veterans and survivors to learn about and apply for PACT Act-related care and benefits. Since then, the website has garnered over 4.5 million page views from more than 3.1 million unique visitors.

Earned Media: VA is executing an aggressive national and local earned media campaign, seeking to inform Veterans and survivors about the PACT Act and encourage them to apply. Between Aug. 10 and Nov. 30, these efforts have helped generate 8.5K news articles and 3.9K broadcast items about the PACT Act — with a total potential reach of 28.4 billion.

Paid Media: VA is executing a nationwide, targeted advertising campaign across TV, streaming, radio, podcasts, YouTube, Google, Bing, Twitter, Facebook, Military Times, Military.com, USA Today, RallyPoint and more. VA is launching a new PACT Act PSA and
running a Times Square video ad on toxic exposure care and benefits. To date, VA has spent more than $3.1 million on PACT Act advertising, garnering approximately 100 million impressions. This campaign is focused on reaching all eligible Veterans and survivors, including those who have not previously come to VA for benefits or care.

Print, digital and video resources: VA has developed a library of PACT Act flyers, videos and fact sheets to help Veterans understand what this new law means for them. The videos have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times across platforms, and the resources have been shared directly with Veterans, VA facilities, VSOs and other partners nationwide.

Direct mail: VA has sent 136 million e-mails with PACT Act information, videos or frequently asked questions.

VA encourages all eligible Veterans and survivors to apply for their earned PACT Act-related health care and benefits now. Veterans and survivors can apply or learn more about the PACT Act by visiting VA.gov/PACT, by calling 1-800-MYVA411 or by attending one of next week’s events.

Korean War Veteran Buried at Loescher Veterans Cemetery

Arthur Glasser, Veteran, Buried on November 22nd, 2022

Last month, a Korean War veteran passed away at the VA nursing home.  Members of VVA Chapter # 333 along with the Rockland County Marine Corps League paid a final tribute to Korean war veteran Arthur Glasser.  Arthur did not have any immediate family, only the extended family of brother veterans in attendance.  Providing a last farewell to a deserved veteran such as Arthur is a most humbling experience for his fellow veterans.

Some of Rockland's veterans made sure that this veteran and his service to our nation was remembered. A proper burial was held at Frederick Loescher Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, November 22nd, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. with a R.C. Marine Corps Detachment Honor Guard and other veterans attending.

Arthur Glasser was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 25 Nov 1952 until 15 Dec 1954. He served with the 724th Transportation BN in Korea and was awarded: Korean S/C med, UN S/C med, and NATL DEF S/C medals.  Thank you for your service to our country, Arthur.   Rest in Peace.
