Farmingdale, L.I. Armed Forces Reserve Center Renamed

From General John Hussey:
On Monday, May 31st, 2021, the Farmingdale Armed Forces Reserve Center was renamed in honor of PFC Thomas Minogue, a local hero who died in Vietnam on March 21, 1967.  PFC Minogue
was put in for the Medal of Honor for saving the life of his Company Commander and perhaps his entire company.  He was a native New Yorker who grew up in the Inwood section of Manhattan. His Dad is a retired NYPD Officer.
PFC Minogue was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross but his brother is pursuing getting the Medal of Honor awarded.

Here is PFC Minogue's Award Citation:
"The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Thomas Francis Minogue (ASN: 51608891), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 21 March 1967, while serving as Platoon Medic for the Third Platoon, Company C, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. His unit was conducting a search and destroy operation in Kontum Province, Republic of Vietnam, and engaged a numerically superior enemy force. When the company commander was seriously wounded, Private Minogue ran through thirty meters of intense enemy fire to shield his commander with his body and treat his wounds. As the enemy charged the position, he ignored the intrinsic peril and threw himself across his leader and consequently received multiple gunshot wounds. His selfless actions also provided protection for the radiotelephone operator, who used his rifle and hand grenades to repulse the enemy and communicated with the platoons and battalion headquarters. Private Minogue continued to shield his commander as he and the radiotelephone operator moved him to a safer position. When the enemy assaulted their new position, he again covered the commander's body with his own and protected the radiotelephone operator. The company commander occasionally regained consciousness long enough to encourage his men and adjust air and artillery support. Private Minogue continued to treat him until overcome by his own mortal wounds. His extraordinary heroism not only saved the lives of the radio operator and company commander, but also made it possible for them to continue to operate the command post. The tactical and valorous significance of his heroism is highlighted by the fact that, without the operation of the command post, the company would not have survived until a relief force arrived to force the enemy to break contact. Private Minogue's supreme effort and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the Armed Forces of his country."  For further information, contact General John Hussey via email at :jfhussey@aol.com

Bowline Park Watchfire May 30, 2021

VVA #333 Annual Watchfire Vigil, May 30, 2021

Watchfires are built every year at midnight on May 30th, the traditional Memorial Day, at four permanent locations in Rockland County, New York. The locations are: Clausland Mountain in Orangeburg, Piermont Pier in Piermont, Bowline Park in Haverstraw, and Gene Levy Park in Spring Valley.

In spite of the rainy, windy, chilly weather this year, the veterans still kept vigil for those who never made it home from Vietnam, and those who still have not fully come home. Here is a photo from the Bowline Park Watchfire in Haverstraw. See what you think, but it looks to me as if a soldier stopped by and knelt by the fire, perhaps for warmth, on his long journey home.

VA To Readjudicate Veteran and Survivor Claims

VA to readjudicate Veteran and survivor claims for possible herbicide exposure

WASHINGTON — Veterans who were previously denied service connection for an herbicide related presumptive condition
due to lack of in-country Vietnam service will have their claims automatically readjudicated by VA.
The department began readjudicating claims in April for Veterans who served in the offshore waters of the Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam War but were denied for one or more herbicide related conditions, on the basis that military service was not performed on the landmass of the Republic of Vietnam or on its inland waterways.

“Readjudication means VA will review the evidence of record and provide replacement decisions in the cases of Veterans who were previously denied service connection benefits,” said Acting VA Under Secretary for Benefits Thomas Murphy. “We have the proper resources in place to meet the needs of our Veteran community and will ensure all eligible Veterans’ and their survivors’ claims are examined thoroughly and fairly.”

The review also applies to eligible survivors of deceased Vietnam-era Veterans and is part of the Veterans Benefits Administration’s implementation of the Nov. 5, 2020, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California order in Nehmer vs. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, requiring VA to readjudicate previously denied claims.

VA will determine if benefits for qualifying disabilities can now be paid retroactively to the date of previously denied claims. The court’s decision requires automatic readjudication in such cases without requiring a new claim, and potentially paying benefits to the survivors or estates of deceased beneficiaries.

More information is available regarding VA disability benefits based on Agent Orange exposure.
Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemptions by State

Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemptions by State

Disabled veterans have many tax breaks and discounts offered to them; in most states these service members also have the option of using some form of property tax break offered on the basis of having a service-connected disability.  Not all states offer the same tax breaks, and the qualifying criteria for such tax relief will also vary, but it pays to look into your options where state property taxes are concerned since qualifying veterans and their spouses (where applicable) can save literally thousands of dollars at tax time.

Certain property tax exemptions may focus on the disability rather than the applicant’s status as a veteran; other exemptions may be dependent on having a VA-rated disability. Some states may require the veteran to register once for a certain tax benefit, others may require annual re-certification.  Not all tax exemptions or tax relief applies to all veterans or to all veterans with a disability. The qualifying criteria will vary depending on the state.

It’s important to remember that tax laws are always subject to change; discuss your state’s tax exemptions for the current tax year with a professional to make sure the past year’s exemptions or other tax benefit will apply in the current tax year.

Flag Day -- June 14th

U.S. Flag honoring Flag Day, June 14th, 1917
In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The Flag Resolution, passed on June 14, 1777, stated: "Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

The United States Army also celebrates the U.S. Army birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.  Information from Wikipedia.com.
